I see a lot of people asking how long it would take to grow your hair to this length. Let me try and answer that using my personal experience and my wife's expertise as a career cosmetologist who loves men with long hair. ( my profile pic is a couple of years old But is a good example of the length my hair was when I started growing it out.)

I've been growing my hair out for about 9ish months now, starting from a #2 on the side and a couple inches or so on top. My hair is currently almost as long as this guys, MAYBE an inch shorter in the back. In another 3 months it will definitely be that long or longer. So about a year for me to achieve this length from a standard men's cut.

You can count on adding at least a half inch of new growth a month, and a lot of people can beat that rate genetically. That's at least 6 inches in a year if you are totally shaved. 6 inches is long, place a ruler from the side of your head or at your bangs, thats decent length regardless. Nothing will make it go faster beyond your genes and just staying healthy. A mutlvitamin if your diet is lacking may help, but not noticeably. DO NOT get your 'split ends' trimmed every 4-6 weeks, it will add tons of time. Instead take care of your new growth by using decent products for your hair type and more importantly the right type of comb/brush to avoid damaging the hair type.

You will occasionally want to stop the whole experiment, but don't give up. Just embrace looking a little ratty for a while. And get styling products and learn how to use them. It'll help with growing it out and will be critical to it looking nice once long. If you have thin or thinning hair, sorry but don't bother growing it out. It will draw attention HEAVILY to the fact your hair is thinning and will look more awful the longer it gets. I'm almost 40 and my hair is honestly not as thick as it should be but with good styling and some cutting tricks by my wife I can just barely pull it off. A thick, full beard of decent (kempt) length can help A LOT as you can see with this guy and my personal experience.

Finally, when its at the length you want, go get an ACTUAL HAIRSTYLE/CUT! Just letting it grow for a year is not a style, a QUALIFIED AND TALENTED stylist can transform your shapeless mop into the most handsome and stylish 'do you can imagine.

Choosing who to trust with your hard won locks can be scary. Research your stylist carefully, all stylists have a few cuts/looks they're absolute masters in. You don't want the fade expert anymore, I don't care how long they have been cutting your hair oh, unless they also specialize in long men's hair you need to find someone with a portfolio of styles that resemble your desired look. Reference pics are a HUGE help so don't be shy about showing them. A great stylist will also ALWAYS explain EVERY step of the cut to you both before and during with lots of check-ins and stops for feedback along the way.

Additionally when choosing a stylist dont cheap out. While cost isnt necessarily indicative of quality or as important as experience doing your style, it is generally indicative of a high in-demand stylist who can basically name their price and still keep a full book of clients. My wife for instance will absolutely run you well over $100 with a tip just for a cut and style. Any coloring or highlights and mid 3 figures is easy to hit. this is in a Midwest City too, not New York or Los Angeles. She is booked several months in advance with probably 90%+ regulars and the rest referrals. That's a good sign. And remeber this isn't a 7 min sportsclip cut. Just a cut can last an hour depending on desired style. So crack open your wallets, you're getting way less cuts anyway So it'll mostly even out.

Ok i think that is about all I can think of in terms of successfully growing out your hair and how long it'll take. Hopefully a few people will find this helpful. Feel free to reply to this comment with any questions you may have.
